Johnny Unitas’ Super Bowl and Championship Rings Fetch Over $400,000 at Auction

In a thrilling auction event leading up to Super Bowl Sunday, Johnny Unitas’ iconic Super Bowl V ring commanded an impressive price of $258,500. The auction, held annually in Las Vegas, showcased various items from the Hall of Fame quarterback’s illustrious career, all curated by his family. Despite his early exit from the game against the Dallas Cowboys due to injury, Unitas’ memorabilia, including his Super Bowl ring, attracted significant interest and garnered high bids.

The auction price of Unitas’ Super Bowl V ring notably surpassed the value of his 1958 NFL championship ring by over $100,000. The latter ring commemorated his pivotal role in the historic overtime victory against the New York Giants, a game that is widely credited with elevating the national stature of professional football.

Among the other noteworthy items sold at the auction were Unitas’ Hall of Fame ring, which fetched an impressive $38,175, and his 1967 NFL MVP award, which was acquired for $64,625. Furthermore, a pair of Unitas’ signature high-top cleats achieved a final selling price of $27,025.

Equally commanding a top sale price of $258,500 was a game-worn jersey worn by Tom Brady during the 2014 season. Authenticated by MeiGray, this jersey was donned during the season opener against the Dolphins, a campaign where Brady secured his fourth of seven Super Bowl titles.

The auction also featured memorabilia from Anthony Munoz, the legendary Hall of Fame offensive lineman. A game-worn Cincinnati Bengals jersey from the 1980s garnered a respectful sum of $16,450, and Munoz’s uniform from his final NFL game sold for $11,456, further adding to the allure of this exceptional event.

Other notable sales included a game-worn 2023 Brock Purdy jersey, which sold for an impressive $30,550, and a 2022 Lamar Jackson game-worn jersey that fetched $22,325. Additionally, a game-worn helmet worn by Ronnie Lott in the 1980s commanded a sale price of $19,975. A 1997 Dan Marino game-worn jersey also found a new owner for $17,625. Lastly, a game-used Super Bowl XXXVIII football was purchased for $14,100, highlighting the enduring legacy and value of memorabilia from football legends.

This auction served as a testament to the enduring popularity and timeless appeal of football memorabilia. Collectors and fans alike were drawn to this event, eager for the opportunity to own a piece of sports history and be a part of the legacy of these revered football icons, including Johnny Unitas, Tom Brady, and Anthony Munoz. The sale of their memorabilia at such high prices is a testament to the enduring passion and admiration for the game and the players who have left an indelible mark on its history.
